Setup Static IP or Dynamic IP Address
Static and Dynamic IP addresses
Understanding the difference between a static and dynamic IP address is part of the setup of a security camera system for remote viewing. A static or dynamic address is the manner an internet connection is made to a local IP network. They are types of protocols that are part of the communications protocols of the Internet Protocol Suite commonly known as TCP/IP or Transmission Control Protocol and Internet Protocol.
A static IP address assignment is designated to a specific location on an IP network. This specific IP address applies to the external network, as well as the internal network. The external IP address is the address your service provider uses to connect you computers to the internet. Both static and dynamic IP addresses are assigned by your internet provider.
The internal or Private IP network is the network inside of your home or office. When assigned a specific IP location it is a static address. The internal IP address includes the location of your computer, DVR, security camera, printer, Xbox, Wii or other device connected to your router. DHCP is used to establish dynamic internal IP addresses.
The external static IP address is like having the same mailing address for the devices on the internal network. Each device on the internal network is normally password protected. If you do not have a Static IP address, you can request one from your internet service provider.
A Dynamic IP address is found in residential neighborhoods. The external Dynamic IP address will change at the whim of your ISP, Internet Service Provider, or a loss of power to your router. When this IP address changes, access to the connection of your WLAN, Wireless Local Area Network, is broken and has to be reestablished. Computers and other devices are set to reestablish this connection, security cameras are not but can be set up easily.
The new Dynamic IP address connection is made through a DDNS, Dynamic Domain Name System. The DDNS can be established at the menu of the security camera or it can be established at the router for the security camera.
The router menu setup will have a setup menu called DDNS, just click. A window will appear directing you to a DDNS. Fill out the information and set up your account.
There are Free services available such as No-Ip and DynDNS that will automatically find your new IP address and forward your request to your WLAN. DDNS services establish a web address that will always find and connect to your WLAN providing service to the devices within your LAN. Just remember, when viewing a security camera over the internet, whether it is a computer or cell phone, the connection is made through an external dynamic IP address or an external static IP address. Without proper setup of static or dynamic address there will be no remote viewing of your WLAN. For more video information regarding the setup of security cameras, visit TheSpyGeeks.
